2010 Summer Reading List
Students are expected to read at least two books during their summer vacation.
- The following are mandatory:
- ALL-SCHOOL BOOK: Red Azalea by Anchee Min
- 9th Grade: The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
- 10th Grade: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
- 11th Grade: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
- 12th Grade: Teaching a Stone to Talk: Expeditions and Encounters by Annie Dillard
Students should keep notes on what they read including the author, title, publishing information, setting, major characters, and highlights about the books. These notes should accompany the students to class on the first day of school. During the first weeks of school, students will be asked to work with their summer reading as part of class or small cross-grade group work.
In addition to the mandatory summer reading, the Humanities teachers recommend the following list. It includes:
- 1) specific books to read,
- 2) a list of historical figures on whom you can find biographies,
- 3) numerous authors whose work is of great literary significance,
- 4) topics relevant to your studies in the coming school year.
