Your Account(s)
User Accounts and Passwords
|
Use complex passwords and keep them private and secure. Log off of your workstation when you have finished your work. Leave all computers on (but remember to log off) every Monday night - this allows the computers to scan for viruses and update software while you are sleeping! |
Each student and staff person of Waldorf High School has a computer account. Your username is your first initial followed by your last name, without a space. The first time you log into a computer on the WALDORF network you will use a temporary password.
For both students and teachers, you will be required to change your password the first time you log in. Passwords must be at least 6 characters long. They should also contain both upper and lower case characters and at least one non-alphanumeric character (like #, $, @, !, etc.) In general, any word that could be found in the dictionary would be an extremely poor choice for a password. This includes many proper nouns, too!
You may be required to change you password periodically.
My Documents and Disk Quotas
Any documents you store in the My Documents folder will be stored on the WALDORF network, on one of the school servers, in a folder accessible only to you. This arrangement will allow for tape backups of your data to be made at regular intervals and will also allow you to access your "My Documents" from any machine on the network.
Disk usage quotas are a necessary aspect of this approach. Since there are over 150 users at the school, it is necessarily to limit the amount of data that each user stores on the servers. Currently, quotas are 200 MB for students and 500 MB for teachers. Special allowances may be made to increase disk quotas for users who need more storage: please see Jessica Eicher if you have any questions.
Email Accounts
Waldorf faculty and staff have email accounts, which in most cases should be named according to your first initial followed by your last name. Email accounts are not tied to your computing account, so the passwords may be different.
Your Waldorf email account may be accessed via an email client like Eudora or Outlook Express, or via a web interface. The latter will be especially convenient for teachers who may not have a personal computer at work and want to be able to access their email from any computer.
How Do I?
Sharing Files with Other Users
As in previous years, there are shared network drives available to teachers and students. The student share (drive T: on most computers) is accessible to both students, teachers, and staff. The staff share (drive S: on most computers) is only accessible to teachers and staff. Any documents you put in these folders will be accessible to everyone else in the appropriate group(s), but will also count against your disk usage quota.

Printers and Printing
You do not need to "add printer" in order to print to any networked printer at the high school -- you only have to "connect" to it. To connect to a printer:
- Click on Search on the Start menu.
- Choose For Printers.
- Click the Find Now button.
- You should see at least four printers in the list. Double click on the printer you wish to connect to. There will be no response from your computer, but the printer should now be connected. Go to your application and try to print to the printer you added.
Installing Software
Currently, only several faculty and staff members are permitted to make administrative changes to a workstation machine. This includes installing most software and making changes to the operating system. Please consult with Jessica Eicher before installing any software or to request that a certain piece of software be installed.
Policies and Support
Computing as a Privilege
Computing at SFWHS is a privilege the school provides to meet the needs of students and faculty to facilitate learning in an academic environment. Please consult the Student and Faculty Handbooks for further elaboration on the policies which should be adhered to while using school computers in order to retain this right especially in the areas of appropriate behavior to help guide you in using this resource.
Virus Protection and Software Updates
Virus protection is automatically configured and updated weekly on all machines at Waldorf High School. Please do not attempt to install your own virus protection software -- it will interfere with the software already in place.
Please leave all machines on every Monday night (but do remember to log off!) -- this will allow the virus scanning software and software updates to run overnight. On other nights, please turn off all workstations -- this will save energy and is better for the hardware.
Wireless Access
Wireless access is available at the high school in the library, faculty room, and computer lab. You will need to configure your laptop to use WPA security standards and connect to one of the three signals (W1, W2, or W3). The password is to be given out on a case by case basis by Jessica Eicher.
