The Project: Phase One completed 12/31/07
A Permanent Home for the Waldorf High School
We have purchased a wonderful site at 470 West Portal for use as a school building. Its modern, voluminous style includes banks of floor-to-ceiling windows that open in the back to a beautiful eucalyptus forest. This offers a unique atmosphere in an urban setting. The free-span architecture has allowed our design team to house our program in an innovative and very efficient way.

The Weavery
The newly renovated building now has 23,000 square feet of custom-built classrooms, including science labs (chemistry, physics and biology), art studios, movement facilities and a beautiful library.
Reception Area
These attractive and beautifully designed spaces for lectures, demonstrations and practical experimentation ideally support the faculty goals of inspiring young people to excellence and social conscience through imaginative thinking and purposeful projects.
Science Lab
The new building has enough square footage to enable the school to double its enrollment. This expanded capacity will enable an additional 100 students to have access to the Waldorf high school experience.
Phase One completed 12/31/07! With many thanks to our generous community members we are pleased to announce that more than $3 million in gifts and pledges has been raised in support of Phase 1. Now... on to phase 2!
The First LEED Certified School Building in San Francisco
At San Francisco Waldorf School, a deep commitment to the environment is an integral part of our educational philosophy and our programs.
It is alive in our students, faculty and parent body. We have applied this commitment to the development of our new high school campus.
The U. S. Green Building Council’s standard for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED emphasizes sustainable site development, water consumption, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Goals include improved health and productivity, reduced operating costs, reduced impacts on local communities and the natural environment, and a healthy, sustainable future.
470 West Portal would most certainly have been demolished for its residential development potential had we not purchased it. The adaptive re-use of this building was only the first step on our path towards LEED “Gold” certification for our high school.
Other key LEED elements are: window replacements, overhaul of the heating and air exchange systems, energy efficient lighting and skylights, and the use of renewable materials in floors, ceilings, and finish millwork.
